| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
| |
Since joining the South Des Moines Chamber's Board in the mid 1990's, serving as President in 1999, and
working on the Membership Committee ever since - I don't know when I've been more excited about the Chamber!
It could be because I know so many of you, or that I have worked with so many, or because I have enjoyed a
multitude of great relationships that I am really looking forward to serving as President this year.
Change is constant today and that is very evident in the Board of Directors. Sadly, Mary Bickford and
Rodney Janssen are leaving, but we are eager to welcome new directors Mary Ellen Nicklaus, John Irving,
Teresa Holland, and Sadie Smid as well as new Ambassadors Committee co-chairs Verna May and Cathy Steiner.
Remember, the Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month, at A.I.B. College of Business at 4:00P.M.
If you have any items or topics of importance to bring to the board, you are welcome to attend.
2004 was a very successful year for the Chamber. Last year, membership was increased, as was attendance
at monthly membership meetings. There were many opportunities to network, 2 membership receptions, and alot
more promotion of our members through the Newsletter, Press Citizen, and at monthly meetings. Our monthly
lunch meetings have been very well received, and as mentioned, greatly attended. We don't plan to change
this format and hope that you can attend our next one on Feb. 15th at Wakonda Club. Remember, if you are
our Business of the Month, you are our official host for this lunch meeting and are welcome to bring co-workers,
guests, and all the promotional material you can to promote your business. This has truly become a valuable
way to network and increase awareness about your products and services. If you'd like to know more about how
the Chamber can promote your business, please call me or one of our Directors.
People generally don't get real excited during January, but that's not the case here! By the time this
Newsletter reaches you, we will have participated in the Legislative Reception at the new Pappajohn Center
and showcased the Four Points Sheraton's Main Event Catering to hundreds of metro citizens and state
legislators. We will have honored two individuals as Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
We have been fortunate to work with these honorees through a variety of Chamber work over the years as
well as know them in their professional capacities. At a recent City Planning and Zoning meeting,
(Citizen of the Year) Nancy Williams was very eloquent and passionate about the south side. (Volunteer of the
Year) John Kendeigh has long been committed to the South Des Moines Chamber and Board, as well as many other
activities, and he continues to do so. My hat's off to both of them.
Lastly, I'd like to thank the staff at the Four Points Sheraton for hosting a warm and wonderful
Chamber Holiday Luncheon in December. I was very pleased at such a great turnout, and in case you missed
it, the Lincoln High School Chamber Choir was terrific! We look forward to seeing you at all the great monthly
meetings and special events in 2005.
