PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am currently on the Greater Des Moines Partnership D.C. One Trip as I write this message. It has been an honor representing the Southside of Des Moines and being a part of the economic and community development effort. I would like to thank Amar Sinha, Joan Bindel, and John Irving, our other South Des Moines board members who came on this trip to represent the Southside and other community needs.

While working with the 21 affiliate chambers of commerce it is obvious that together we can accomplish great things.

Our annual spring fling was a huge success. We had approximately 120 people in attendance. The silent auction raised $1,000 for our Southside YMCA. I was pleased to be part of the ribbon cutting at the grand opening of their new pool. It was a pleasure presenting the YMCA with a check for $1,000. The smiles on the children’s faces when they splashed into the new pool were a great example of how the Southside is making a “SPLASH” on improving our great city and making this the "place to be."

PARTNERSHIP'S DC TRIP

South Des Moines Chamber Representatives Promote a Unified Regional
Economic Growth Agenda on Partnership's 27th Annual D.C. Trip

Representatives of the South Des Moines Camber joined a record-setting 200 of Central Iowa's business, civic and community leaders for the Greater Des Moines Partnership's lobbying trip to Washington D.C. The itinerary underscored a range of educational and networking opportunities for Juliana Kincheloe of Iowa Realty and Amar Sinha of Four Points Sheraton, who participated in the trip June 7-9. The 2006 trip, themed D.C. ONE, highlighted a regional agenda that promoted economic growth with one voice, one mission, one focus as one united Greater Des Moines region.

"Year after year, our Affiliate Chambers of Commerce make up the backbone of our annual advocacy trip to our nation's capital.," said Martha Willits, President and CEO of the Partnership. "By working together as one voice, we are able to successfully promote our regional economic federal agenda with one voice as one united Greater Des Moines region."

The 2006 Congressional Leadership luncheons featured presentations by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA). Senator Grassley, Senator Harkin, Congressman Boswell, Congressman Latham, Congressman Latham and Congressman King addressed the group at the Thursday breakfast. The trip was capped at a Friday morning breakfast with a preview of this fall's national elections and the upcoming Iowa Caucuses from Chuck Todd, Editor-In-Chief of The Hotline.

The delegation also attended workshops on immigration policy, the aviation industry, education, and the future of local economic development incentives and eminent domain under federal law. Other issues addressed during the three-day program included transportation, health care, quality of life, business climate and other economic growth issues.

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Partnership's D.C. trip, which was launched in 1979 by former Des Moines Mayor Arthur Davis, who was then Chair of the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Federation, one of the four organizations which later merged to become the Partnership. Over the years, the trip has evolved to include civic, business and community leaders from nearly every community in the Des Moines metro area. In working with our well positioned Congressional delegation, the 2005 D.C. trip helped generate an estimated $175 million for regional infrastructure, quality of life, and other economic development projects, including: I-235, the Southeast Connector, Riverpoint West, World Food Prize Foundation, Principal Riverwalk, recreational trails projects, Pappajohn Higher Education Center, and transportation projects in Altoona/Pleasant Hill, Ankeny, Bondurant, Clive, Grimes, Indianola, Johnston, Urbandale, Waukee, and West Des Moines.

For more information about D.C. ONE 2006, please contact Jay Byers, Sr. Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy at the Partnership at jbyers@desmoinesmetro.com or visit www.desmoinesmetro.com/dctrip. The dates for the 2007 D.C. trip are set for June 6-8, 2007.
