| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
| |
It's hard to believe that the year is almost halfway over. Have you gotten involved in the Chamber this year?
If not, it's not too late! Some of our most exciting events are coming up! If you want to build your business and
network with other wonderful people that work and live here on the south side, then mark your calendar for our fun,
upcoming activities!
Our largest attended event of the year is the annual SPRING FLING which is Tuesday, May 23rd , 5:00 p.m. at AIB
College of Business at 2500 Fleur Drive. Our theme this year is Mardis Gras! Bring your beads, masks and costumes!
Call Mary at (515) 286-4996 to order your tickets.
The next Membership Luncheon is Tuesday, June 20th, 11:30am at Wakonda Country Club. Our guest speaker will be
Greg Edwards from the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. This is another great way for you to find
out what our wonderful city has to offer.
Congratulations to Danille Brown and April Saylor, our two South Des Moines Chamber scholarship recipients!
These two Lincoln High seniors wrote essays on how living and working on the south side has prepared them for life
after school. After reading their essays about how the south side takes pride in their community, it's obvious that
our children are watching and participating in ways of community involvement and south side pride.
I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events! Everyone is always welcome to attend our functions. Come
and see what the South Des Moines Chamber is all about. We welcome new members all year long!
Have a great spring!
Juliana Kincheloe, President

| BUSINESS OF THE MONTH - HEARTLAND INN AIRPORT |
| |
| Checkout Heartland Inn's New Fresh Look!
Many changes are taking place at the Heartland Inn Des Moines Airport, located at 1901 Hackley Avenue, Des
Moines, IA. The Heartland Inns of America chain, owned and operated by Heartland Midwest Management Group out of
Waterloo, Iowa, is rolling out exciting new changes this summer. Heartland's 19 locations are undergoing renovations
that range from new room furnishings to front foyer makeovers. The new crisp, fresh look compliments Heartland Inn's
exceptional customer service. In response to the growing demand for smoke-free accommodations, and in line with the
increasing number of businesses banning tobacco use in public places, as of June 1, 2006, 100% of our rooms and
facilities at Heartland Inns will be smoke free. There's more… keep your eyes open for Heartland's fresh new logo
as building signage and billboards throughout Iowa appear.
Heartland Inn Des Moines Airport, located on the south side since 1994, has excellent accommodations to offer
any traveler. Every room of the Heartland Inn offers plush pillow-top mattresses and free wireless high speed
Internet access. The hotel also features an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, complimentary business services
at the front desk, and free airport shuttle. Guests start their morning off right with a hearty breakfast that
includes a variety of morning greats: homemade Belgian waffles, biscuits and gravy, fine pastries, fresh fruit,
and much more. Every Wednesday night at every Heartland Inn a Manager's social offers guests a complimentary
home-cooked meal and the opportunity to mingle with staff and guests alike. We even grill out in the summer!
Heartland Inn at 1901 Hackley Ave. would like to extend an invitation to all South Side Chamber Members to
stop in anytime and take a fresh look at what we have to offer. There's a reason we call it Heartland!

| Membership Committee Begins Buddy System |
| |
| The Chamber Membership Committee met this month to come up with new ways to encourage membership and ways to
support new and returning members. Several new ideas will be implemented throughout the year including formalizing
a “greeter” program for each monthly meeting and implementing a buddy system, to name a few. You may be called upon
to help with these initiatives!
During the month of May, members of the hotel industry will be asked to be greeters at the Spring Fling. During
the month of June, focus will be on inviting a new member to attend the luncheon – with this new buddy system, we
hope to increase meeting attendance and to help new members feel welcome and comfortable in attending monthly
luncheons.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for the Membership Committee, please contact Joan Bindel at:
bindelj@aib.edu.

| SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS |
| |
| The South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the winners of the 2006 South Des Moines Chamber
of Commerce Education Opportunity Grants.
The recipients of this year’s scholarships are Danille Brown, daughter of Danny and Melissa Brown of 1319 West
Street, and April Saylor, daughter of Scott and Vicky Saylor, 5610 SW 7th Street. Both are seniors at Lincoln High
School.
The scholarship recipients are chosen on the basis of a competitive application process including an essay
explaining how the students has integrated the 6 Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Fairness, Caring and Citizenship) into their lives, and how life on the south side has prepared them for life
after high school. The scholarships will be presented to Brown and Saylor at Lincoln High’s Senior Awards Night on
May 24th, and the students will be introduced to the South Des Moines Chamber members at the Annual Spring Fling on
May 23. The scholarship recipients will be available for photos at the South Des Moines Chamber Spring Fling on
May 23.
Thank you to the members of the 2006 Education Committee for their hard work in reviewing the scholarship
applications and selecting this year's 2006 South Des Moines Chamber Education Opportunity Grant recipients.
Committee members left to right: Gennaro Ligouri, Ligouri & Associates, Inc;
Mary Kay Hamell, Bankers Trust
Company; Juliana Kincheloe, Iowa Realty; and Tonja Zegarac, Main Event Catering.
Not pictured: Shirlee Buschow, AIB College of Business;
Amanda Blanchard, Community State Bank; Lin Phillips,
Career and Life Transition Counseling.
The winning essays are as follows:
Living and working on the south side of Des Moines has helped me immensely in preparing for my life after high
school. Next year I plan on attending Simpson College and double majoring in Business and Theater with a possible
minor in Spanish. After graduating from Simpson I see myself returning to the south side to live and work where I
grew up. With a college education I plan on being involved with theater around Des Moines by possibly working with
the Civic Center, The Drama Workshop, and The Des Moines Playhouse. I also plan on opening my own business right
here on the south side.
Two years ago I began working at a small business called Heartland Flagpoles. Up until that time I had never
pictured myself as an entrepreneur nor did I know how challenging it is to run a business. After the first few
months of working there I began to see my self in that environment full time. I really enjoy the face-to-face
we-know-your-name mentality of the small business atmosphere. I also believe that the south side is a great place
to open a business because the people are friendly and accepting of new businesses. I feel that my experience
working on the south side has helped me immensely because, if I had never began working at Heartland Flagpoles,
I never would have known that the south side was such a great place to run a business. I also never would have
thought of myself as capable of running my own business.
I was born and raised on the south side and in fact I have never lived anywhere else nor could I imagine
living anywhere else. Living on the south side has helped me to see how nice it is to grow up here. My childhood
memories are happy ones of playing with my neighbors, going to school, and ultimately feeling safe here. I see
this as a great place to live and raise children. There is a certain pride that we as south siders have that is
not easily found in other places. I believe that it is this pride that makes the south side of Des Moines, Iowa,
such a great place to live and work.
Thanks, Danille Brown

How Living and Working on the South Side of DSM Has Prepared Me for Life After High School
Living on the South Side of Des Moines has shown me first-hand the meaning and importance of community. I am
lucky enough to have grown up around different types of people and situations because the South Side is made up of
people from all over the world. This is also one of the older sections of Des Moines and so we are lucky enough to
have generations of families living here. This is a very connected part of our city and I am proud to be a part of
it. Being a part of this tight knit community lets me know I always have a place where I belong.
I have lived on the South Side my entire life and have attended Lincoln High School just like both of my
parents. For four years now I have been a Lincoln cheerleader and consider it a privilege to be able to lead our
crowd in the age old South Side Pride chant underneath the lights at Hutchens stadium. In this neighborhood,
everybody knows everybody, and everyone is very proud of the community's accomplishments. I know the entire South
Side is thrilled to say the 2005-2006 football team is the first Conference Championship team to come out of
Lincoln since 1976.
The South Side is a very diverse part of the city. It is made up of old families who helped to make this
neighborhood what it is and newer families that will continue to carry on the South Side Pride spirit. Living
here has shown me the importance of a caring society. I live in a friendly neighborhood where everyone treats
each other with respect. The people in this neighborhood are wonderful representatives of the South Side and are
open-minded and trustworthy. I would love to be able to stay here in Des Moines upon graduating from college so
that I can use my degree to benefit our community and have the opportunity to start a family in such a welcoming
neighborhood. I have been working on the South Side of Des Moines since I was able to at the age of 14. I was first
employed at Metro Flyers Gymnastics Academy as a receptionist and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I was able to
interact with many Southsiders who were always friendly. I was fortunate enough to learn first-hand how caring the
people that make up our community can be. Before Metro closed down, many people volunteered their time and resources
to help me as well as the company.
This is not the only workplace where the spirit of community is prevalent. I am now employed at the Des Moines
Airport Holiday Inn as a Sidewalk Café attendant as well as a banquet waitress and have been for two years. At the
Holiday Inn we deal not only with people from Iowa but from all over the world. Guests are always commenting on how
welcoming Des Moines is to them and especially this side of town. I love being able to say I am a part of this
great community and I appreciate you considering me for the South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.
