| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
| |
October
is a hopping time! The political races are in full swing, the home buying market is on the rise, gas prices are
coming down, Lincoln won their Homecoming game……life is good! The Lincoln Homecoming Parade was a lot of fun. I
enjoyed seeing a lot of south side pride and school spirit. Everyone was waving and clapping and seemed happy to
see the SDM Chamber in the parade. Of course, maybe it was because I was tossing out good candy? Anyway, life is
good on the south side! We are winning the attention of others in Des Moines.
October 11th is our South Des Moines Chamber Economic Development Forum at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on
Army Post Road from 4-6pm. We will have the attention of several "Movers and Shakers" in our community. It will
be a fantastic opportunity for you to ask questions about the future growth of the south side. This will be one
of our top 5 most attended events. This is a FREE event. We are encouraging ALL members to attend and bring some
friends! Feel free to bring along questions for Mayor Frank Cownie, City Manager Rick Clark, and CEO of the Greater
DSM Partnership Martha Willits. There will be several large commercial and residential developers there as well as
the South Side Revitalization Partnership. I'm looking forward to seeing YOU at this extraordinary event.
Don't forget to RSVP to our Membership Luncheon this month at the Wakonda Club on Fleur Drive. We are expecting
a larger than usual turn out. The SDM Chamber is hosting a Political Forum for the candidates for Polk County
Supervisor, Ward 4. After our luncheon, which starts promptly at 11:30am, candidates Gene Phillips and John Mauro
will be asked questions from our moderator John Irving. I can't stress the importance of calling in your RSVP.
Seating will be limited so DON'T WAIT! The cost is $15.00 if you RSVP and $20.00 at the door.
If you would like to learn more about our fun South Des Moines Chamber, please contact me or any of our board
members. I look forward to all of your renewed memberships at our Membership Blitz at the end of this month!
Encourage other business friends to join our SDM Chamber and become part of the South Side TEAM!
Have a FUNTASTIC fall!

| |
|
JOHN IRVING
is the South Des Moines Chamber Member of the Month for October!
Director of Business Development at Baker Electric, John has served on the South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors for the past 3 years. In addition to working with new clients at Baker Electric, he also manages
client accounts for customers he has worked with in the past thirty years while working in the electrical industry.
While Baker Electric serves clients all over central Iowa, Baker’s office and warehouse facility has been located
on the south side of Des Moines for many years. Located directly across the river from Principal Park, the new
Meredith Trail, which is part of the Principal Riverwalk, runs along the north side of the property. Recently the
company purchased a 136,000 square foot building located at 2301 Fleur Drive. This building will allow the warehouse
operation of Baker Electric, which is currently is in several buildings, to be consolidated into one location.
The new location will also house the pre-fabrication manufacturing division of Baker Electric, which was developed
last year. The corporate offices of the company will remain at the present location.
John serves on several boards, including serving as board president of Leadership Network this year, and a
second term as board president of Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines. Rebuilding Together is the nation’s
largest all volunteer home rehabilitation organization serving elderly, disabled, and low income homeowners. He
also serves on several committees in the electrical and construction industry.
John and his wife, Sally, live in Urbandale and are the parents of three children.

| AIRPORT HOLIDAY INN NEWS RELEASE |
| |
| The Airport Holiday Inn announced today that in order to make room for additional hotel banquet and meeting
space The Crystal Tree Restaurant will close after almost thirty years as one of Des Moines' favorite special
occasion dining spots. Opening in 1977 the Crystal Tree quickly became a fine dining favorite, featuring fountains,
fireplaces and the city's most unique salad bar. The Sunday Brunch was one of the finest in Des Moines. It will be
missed.
Our greatest need is more banquet and meeting space, not a second restaurant. So we have now joined the ranks of
the other large hotels in Des Moines that no longer have two restaurants…WDM Sheraton, Des Moines Marriott, Embassy
Suites, and the downtown Holiday Inn, as well as many others. They have all closed their second restaurant in order
to serve more groups.
Our facility will re-open as additional state-of-the-art conference space to compliment the more than 20,000
square feet of meeting space the Airport Holiday Inn currently enjoys.
Almost 4,000 square feet of space will be divided into three function rooms and two foyers. The Library will
feature a fireplace and seat up to 75 people. The Fireside room will become a luxurious board room seating 30 at
a state-of-the-art conference table. The Iowa room will be 1500 square feet and seat 100 for banquets and up to
150 theatre style. All three rooms will feature wired and wireless internet service. Full food and beverage service
will be available from the hotel's kitchens. The bar will continue to be open evenings.
'THE GRILL'
The Airport Holiday Inn has remodeled its other restaurant, 'The Grill' transforming it into a beautiful café
that will be open from 6am until 10:30pm seven days a week. It will feature a large variety of entrees ranging
from sandwiches to steaks and seafood and breakfast all day. Convenience items will also be available serving the
needs of today's traveler.

| |
| The Women's Chamber Alliance has been hard at work putting together their third annual ATHENA Award Program for

Moines Community in a meaningful way.
