PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Now that summer is over, the sound, smell and look of fall is all around us. Students are back in school, Lincoln High football games have started, and the students are making new friends in their classes. It's also that time of the year when our business community networks and grows our Chamber through fun events! Our Membership Blitz will be coming up in October. We need to continue to grow our membership and encourage other businesses to come to the Southside and be a part of our wonderful community.

The Iowa State Fair Parade was a lot of fun. The Affiliate Chamber float, "Presidents on a Stick" won 3rd place in the Non-Commercial category! Having the Chamber Presidents from all of the surrounding communities on one float together was a great symbol of how all of us work together to accomplish great things.

Our ribbon cutting ceremony at Club 2000 (422 Indianola Ave.) was a great success. Please keep Club 2000 in mind if you are looking for a fun place to go for lunch or meet friends after work. Their food is fabulous! Our Chamber members look forward to their success.

Is all of this activity wearing you out? Stop by the Twisted Bean Coffee Co. located at 6155 S.E. 14th St. and get energized for the rest of our events! Their Grand Opening celebration was September 6th.

NETWORKING BUILDS YOUR BUSINESS! It is important to get out and meet other business people in the community. The best way to do that is by participating in our Chamber events! We will be having a Membership Reception at Johnny's Italian Restaurant, September 21st from 5:30-6:45 pm. This is where friendships begin and business happens. Don't miss this great opportunity! Bring plenty of YOUR business cards and MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Besides additional ribbon cuttings, the Membership Blitz, and our Annual Dinner, we are having an Economic Development Forum on October 11th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Mayor Frank Cownie, City Manager Richard Clark, and Martha Willits from the Greater Des Moines Partnership will be our guest speakers. The event is sponsored by several commercial developers and other businesses in our community. It will be held at the Four Points Sheraton on Army Post Road. We are expecting upwards of 200 people to be attending this free event. It will be a fantastic opportunity to find out what new developments are planned for the south side. Find out what exciting things are planned for Southridge Mall and more! This is a great opportunity to ASK QUESTIONS and GET ANSWERS from the movers and the shakers in our community!

Have a fabulous fall and GO RAILS!

Juliana Kincheloe, President

CHAMBER MEMBER OF THE MONTH

VICKY FORESMAN
is the South Des Moines Chamber Member of the Month for September!

Vicky Foresman is the Executive Director of the South Suburban YMCA. Her professional career with the YMCA has spanned 15 years serving and building strong kids, families, and communities. The first two years of her YMCA service was spent in Houston, Texas, before coming to the Des Moines YMCA Association. She is a 1991 University of Northern Iowa graduate specializing in Youth Agency Administration. She is one of five children growing up on the family farm in Audubon, Iowa.

Her civic associations are the South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and numerous YMCA of the USA professional involvements.

She has lived on the south side of Des Moines for 13 years enjoying the outdoor parks, athletic events, and great restaurants in the area. In her free time she enjoys boating, playing softball and volleyball, and walking her dog. She is "married" to the YMCA and have about 100 kids that she claims as her own in the summer and another 40 kids during the school year. The mission of the YMCA and how it serves the community is one of my greatest passions her life. Her personal mission is for people to know that the YMCA is more than just a treadmill or gym and to help them achieve a life balance that the YMCA promotes …..Achieving healthy spirit, mind, and body.

THANK YOU VICKY for being Chamber Member of the Month!

THE ATHENA AWARD

The Women's Chamber Alliance has been hard at work putting together their third annual ATHENA Award Program for the Greater Des Moines area. The ATHENA spirit was born when Martha Mertz of Ohio established the ATHENA Award in 1982 to recognize the leadership of outstanding professional women.

As the only host organization in Central Iowa, the Women's Chamber Alliance brings this program to the Greater Des Moines area to promote women's leadership and honor individuals who strive toward the highest levels of personal and professional accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field and devote time and energy to the Greater Des Moines Community in a meaningful way.

The nomination process is happening right now! If you know someone who demonstrates excellence, creativity, and an initiative in their business and/or profession and is a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership or employed by a member firm, we need YOU to nominate this deserving person!

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Download a complete Nomination Form at www.dsmwca.com.
  2. Prepare your nomination by completing the electronic version and email it to dsmwca@yahoo.com OR print and handwrite the form and mail to Women's Chamber Alliance, P.O. Box #892, Des Moines, IA 50304.

ALLEGRA PRINT & IMAGING FOOTPRINT FUND accepting grant applications from non-profits.

The Allegra Print & Imaging of Des Moines FootPRINT Fund will help nonprofit organizations "leave a footprint" in the community by awarding print services for promotional and informational materials.

The fund will award $20,000 annually to nonprofit organizations and associations seeking financial assistance for graphic design and printing of brochures, newsletters, handouts, invitations, programs and other print communications. Applicants that qualify are eligible to receive up to $1,000 each in 2007. This is the third year Allegra Print & Imaging is sponsoring this grant. In 2006 there were 52 applicants with 20 awarded recipients.

Allegra Print & Imaging launched the FootPRINT Fund as part of its Community Care Campaign, a nationwide effort supported by the company's franchise headquarters, Allegra Network. The FootPRINT Fund was developed to help unite and strengthen local communities by assisting eligible nonprofit organizations and associations in building their awareness and increasing local support.

Award recipients are selected by a review panel based on how the print services will be used to further organization goals including service expansion, program enhancement and maximization of existing resources, as well as the organization's innovation and resourcefulness. All applicants will be notified in writing of their award by December 30, 2006.

To be considered for this award, nonprofit groups, associations and charitable organizations with a main office or branch in Des Moines, IA, must submit a completed application by December 1, 2006. Application forms may be obtained at 1000 Thomas Beck Road or apply online at www.allegradsm.com.
